I have recently discovered crochet and I am (pardon the pun) hooked! I love the feel of the wool between my fingers, love that I can create something and love the blending of the beautiful colours. But what I love most is that every time I pick up my crochet hook and continue with a little square, I think of nothing more than …. next stitch, next stitch, next stitch.
Like most people, I am busy. Busy with kids, husband, home, work, church, friends…..busy. Working from home I also suffer from an inability to turn off. I find that I am constantly in thinking mode. I’m not complaining, I love my life and following my passion for writing books is something that brings me joy, but still there are times when I would like to not think so much.
And then I discovered crochet. It started with a simple granny square with basic stitches. Being left handed presented challenge number one, not knowing anybody who could teach me to crochet was challenge number two. Thank goodness for YouTube! A few tutorials later and I was off.
I have a little bag with my current square and wool that I pop into my handbag. If I have some time where I’m waiting for my daughter to finish her dancing class or waiting for the bell to ring at school, I can spend five minutes thinking of nothing more than next stitch when I would usually have been checking emails or returning phone calls.
If you find that you are so busy being busy, can I recommend taking up a hobby. Crochet may not be your thing, but there is a thing for everyone. Find yours and let it take you to a place of mind clearing peace.
The little square with the black border around the photo is my first finished sunburst square. I’m very proud of it and am even considering framing it!
I took my inspiration from the gorgeous photos above and to the left of mine. Thank you Jenny from The Writing Tree. You don’t know me but your beautiful little squares of sunshine have inspired me greatly.
After a LOT more squares I am going to step right into my dis-comfort zone and attempt one of Terri Crews’ bunny rabbits featured above. Just looking at this gorgeous creature brings a tear to my eye.
Wish me luck!
